The Rookie

Description

The newest issue of Zammo Tales opens with Director Xyplonix explaining the new policy that all experienced Rangers are required to train a rookie.  Zammo is assigned Scylla, a by the book Charybdian.  Zammo, having done things his way for so long resents this change in his life, but is told in no uncertain terms that HE is not the director of the Rangers.

(Backstory--some time ago--one of my readers suggested giving the Captain a partner.  I toyed with the idea, sitting on it for a long time.  But I like the idea of Zammo being put down for not doing things by the book, and with a species he's compatible with.  Unfortunately Scylla isn't all that interested in him--since romance between rangers is proscribed by the book.

Guess this means another berth in the LORELEI...

The picture is clearly an homage to pulp science fiction of th 30's and 40's. As such the style and overall feel is directed by the art of that era. The artist has faithfully imitated the style of broad interaction between characters clearly drawn. The use of humanoid aliens in the picture goes well with the era as well although totally inhuman aliens were also the norm in such illustrations, I believe. The choice of fonts and layout of the "magazine" title and teaser information about the stories within has a proper respect for these covers, too.

As pure art composition, putting the "rookie" in the image between Captain Zammo and his superior works well as a story illustration since she is the object of contention between the Captain and his commanding officer. The garish primary colors work well as homage although if the object was not to imitate this classic art form more subtle textures for the uniforms might have been more realistic. Again, though, the object here is clearly not photorealism.

Nice job, Captain Z. Keep 'em flyin'!
