Description

There's a reason I have problems with Scotty's drunken reminiscence scene in ST:TNG's "Relics" episode. When he tells the Holodeck he wants to stand on the Bridge of the USS Enterprise, the computer asks him which one. He replies "USS Enterprise NCC 1701. No Bloody A B C or D" The deck opens and he finds himself in a fantastic recreation of the original series bridge. Which is marvelous!

But the original Enterprise had (at least)TWO bridge configurations. In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the revamped Enterprise is rolled out with a fantastic redesign. This served as the bridge until "The Search for Spock" when Kirk orders the original ship to self destruct over the Genesis planet. Then at the end of "The Voyage Home" the NEW Enterprise A is rolled out--a carbon copy of the revamped Enterprise.

So I always wondered...How did the holodeck know WHICH bridge of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 to use. Further, given Scotty's beaming smile in ST: The Motion Picture as he and Kirk take a travel pod from Spacedock to the Enterprise, and from the fact that Scott had been one of the main engineers on the refit, then wouldn't he be justifiably proud of the NEW bridge configuration?

I know--the scene was fanservice...but it IS a valid question.

And I loved the revamped Enterprise. But nothing will ever change my love for the original Connies....
